Los Angeles exists within a haze that never fully clears. Smog settles into the basin, heat traps particulate matter, and what appears to be coastal mist is often a dangerous mix of fine dust, emissions, and chemical residue suspended in the air we breathe. Air pollution has become a defining condition of modern urban life, particularly in car-dependent cities like Los Angeles, where it accelerates climate change and reinforces health and social inequities. Yet it is frequently mistaken for weather, a confusion that reflects a broader disconnect from the realities of our environment. In the Mist occupies the moment when that misperception breaks—inside the haze itself—where awareness begins, denial fades, and the choice to act becomes possible.
